Aerial Photography Services
Aerial photography services are a great way to get a picture of the ground from above. These photos are taken of the ground from an elevated position and the camera is not supported by ground-based structures. A great way to get a shot of cultural or natural features, this allows you to study these features in their entirety from a top-down (bird’s eye) view. There are a number of ways these photos can be taken: from an aircraft, a balloon, a kite or any other flying object. Many types of aerial photography services are available although the two most common are vertical and oblique.
Vertical aerial photography services are taken with the camera pointed straight down. In order to qualify for this designation, the allowable tolerance is usually +3 degrees from perpendicular to the camera axis. Here the photo will cover a relatively small area and the shape of ground area covered on this photo closely resembles a square or rectangle. This will give you an unfamiliar view of the ground as relief is not readily apparent. If this photo is taken over flat terrain, the distance and directions may approach the accuracy of maps.
When talking about types of oblique aerial photography services, what is being referred to is either low or high oblique. Low oblique is taken when the camera is inclined approximately 30 degrees from vertical. This photo will cover a small area and the ground area is a trapezoid although the photo itself is rectangular or square. Objects have a familiar view and the photo is comparable to seeing the same objects from the top of a high hill or tall building. With high oblique, the photo is taken with a camera inclined about 60 degrees from vertical. This picture will cover a very large area, yet not all is usable. Again, as with low oblique, the ground area covered is a trapezoid but the photo will be square or rectangular. The relief is discernible but distorted in this type of picture.
Other types of aerial photography services include trimetrogon, multiple lens photography, convergent photography, and panoramic photo shoots. Trimetrogon is an assemblage of 3 photos taken concurrently while multiple lens photography is a collection of composite photos. Convergent photography is done with a single twin-lens wide angle camera or two single-lens, wide angle cameras and panoramic shots are taken with a scanning camera which sweeps the terrain of interest from side to side across the direction of flight. Each has its own application and your photographer will be able to determine which is best for your needs.
